Why You Should Take Osteoporosis Seriously

by Son PMR(Physical medicine & Rehabilitation ) & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul

A Rare Case of Multiple Fractures Without Major Trauma

A middle-aged female patient first visited our clinic with sciatic nerve pain. After undergoing treatment, her symptoms improved significantly, and she returned to her daily routine, including working as a caregiver for individuals with disabilities.

However, during work, she experienced sudden mid-back and pelvic pain and returned to our clinic. Initially, it seemed like simple muscle strain, but because the pain was unusually intense and limited her movement, we decided to perform a follow-up X-ray.

The results were surprising: she had developed two compression fractures in the thoracic spine and a pubic bone fracture in the pelvis, despite the absence of any major trauma. What could have caused such widespread fractures?

Further bone mineral density (BMD) testing revealed that the patient had severe osteoporosis. She also had a history of thyroid disease and had been taking long-term medication, which may have contributed to reduced bone density.

Management and Recovery

To stabilize her spine, we prescribed a Knight Taylor brace, and she was started on osteoporosis medication to promote bone health. Along with appropriate pain management, she experienced significant symptom relief and was eventually able to return to her daily activities safely.

Why Osteoporosis Is a Silent Danger

Often called the “silent thief of bones,” osteoporosis progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs. Even minor impacts or normal daily activities can result in fractures, particularly in the spine, pelvis, and wrists.

As in this case, persistent back or pelvic pain may not be just muscular. In patients with low bone density, spontaneous fractures can occur without significant trauma and lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and a decline in quality of life.

The Importance of Early Screening

The good news is that osteoporosis is both preventable and treatable when detected early. Regular bone density screenings are highly recommended, especially for:

  • Women over 50

  • Postmenopausal women

  • Individuals with a history of thyroid disease or long-term steroid use

At Son PMR & Chiropractic Clinic, we offer not only pain relief treatment but also comprehensive evaluation and guidance for osteoporosis management and fracture prevention. If you experience persistent pain in the back or pelvis — even without a fall — we strongly encourage a professional evaluation.
