Does Having Calcific Tendinitis Always Cause Symptoms?

by Son PMR(Physical medicine & Rehabilitation ) & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul

Many people feel concerned when they hear, “You have calcific tendinitis,” after an X-ray or shoulder examination. The idea of calcium deposits in a tendon may sound alarming, and some may wonder if surgery is necessary.

But does the presence of calcific tendinitis always mean you’ll experience pain or other symptoms?

Not necessarily.

Calcific tendinitis refers to the buildup of calcium deposits in the tendons of the shoulder, most commonly the rotator cuff. It is often discovered during imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasounds. Interestingly, some people have these calcium deposits without any noticeable symptoms. In fact, it is not uncommon for calcific tendinitis to be found incidentally during imaging for unrelated issues.

On the other hand, if the calcium deposit undergoes sudden changes or triggers inflammation, it can cause significant pain and limited shoulder movement. In some cases, the pain can be intense enough to disturb sleep or interfere with daily activities.

Is treatment necessary if there are no symptoms?

If there are no symptoms, treatment may not be needed.
More important than the imaging findings themselves is how the patient feels — whether they have pain, stiffness, or difficulty using the shoulder.

If symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, it’s important to consult a medical professional for a proper evaluation and to consider treatment options tailored to the condition.

In Summary

Calcific tendinitis is a relatively common finding and
does not always cause symptoms.
Being aware of your body and how it feels is key. If you do experience pain or movement limitations, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from a healthcare provider.
