(Lumbar Disc Herniation) Why Does It Take Longer to Heal When You Have Muscle Weakness or Numbness?

by Son PMR(Physical medicine & Rehabilitation ) & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul

Many patients with lumbar disc herniation (also called a slipped or herniated disc) experience not only lower back pain but also numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the legs. When neurological symptoms like these are present, the recovery process often takes longer.

But why is that the case?

Today, let’s explore the main reasons why severe nerve-related symptoms require a longer treatment period.

1. Nerve healing is much slower than muscle or ligament recovery

A herniated disc can press against nearby nerves. If this pressure is strong enough, the nerves themselves may become damaged or irritated, leading to symptoms like weakness or numbness.

Unlike muscles or ligaments, nerves regenerate very slowly—often only 1–2 mm per day. So, when nerve damage has occurred, recovery may take several months or more.

2. The longer the nerve is compressed, the harder it is to heal

If the nerve compression lasts for a long time, it can lead to chronic inflammation, swelling, or even fibrosis (scarring and stiffening of tissue). These changes make healing more difficult.

Unfortunately, many patients try to endure the pain without treatment until the symptoms worsen—by then, nerve function may already be severely impaired, and the recovery process becomes much slower.

3. Muscles affected by nerve injury may become weak and atrophied

When a nerve doesn’t function properly, the muscles it controls become weak and can shrink in size (atrophy).

This weakens the stability of the spine, increasing the risk of poor posture and recurrent back pain. In such cases, it’s not enough to simply treat the disc—the patient needs rehabilitation and strengthening exercises, which naturally take more time.

4. Secondary problems often develop due to limited movement

Pain and numbness often lead patients to avoid movement. But inactivity can cause muscle imbalance, joint stiffness, and pain in other areas of the body.

As a result, treatment must go beyond the herniated disc itself and focus on restoring the overall balance and function of the spine and nervous system—a process that requires a more comprehensive and longer-term approach.

5. Psychological factors can delay recovery

Living with nerve-related symptoms such as weakness and numbness can cause anxiety, fear, and even depression. These emotional factors often lead to decreased physical activity, which worsens muscle weakness and pain, creating a vicious cycle.

That’s why it’s so important to seek professional guidance and begin a structured, gradual rehabilitation program to regain both physical and emotional confidence.
