Why Cervical Disc Herniation Often Responds Better to Treatment than Lumbar Disc Herniation

Many patients ask,
“Is it true that cervical disc herniation is easier to treat than lumbar disc herniation?”
Based on our clinical observations, the answer is often yes — patients with cervical disc herniation (neck disc problems) tend to respond more quickly and effectively to conservative treatments than those with lumbar (low back) disc herniation.

Here’s why:

1. Anatomical Differences

The cervical spine is smaller and more mobile than the lumbar spine. Cervical disc herniations are usually smaller and cause less widespread structural damage. As a result, conservative treatment often works well, especially when care is provided early.

2. Progression and Injury Patterns

Cervical disc herniation tends to develop gradually and is often detected earlier, while lumbar disc herniation may occur suddenly due to heavy lifting or trauma, leading to more severe or widespread injury. This makes cervical disc cases more predictable and responsive to non-surgical approaches.

3. Location of Nerve Compression

In the neck, nerve root compression tends to be localized, and with precise diagnosis and treatment, symptoms often improve quickly. In the lower back, however, pain can be caused by multiple factors including discs, joints, ligaments, and surrounding muscles, making treatment more complex and slower.

4. Differences in Symptoms

Cervical disc problems typically affect the arms (radiating pain, numbness, or tingling), and these symptoms are quickly noticed, prompting early treatment.
In contrast, lumbar disc herniation affects the legs, and if treatment is delayed, it may even progress to walking difficulties or nerve damage.

5. Our Clinical Approach – Integrated Non-Surgical Treatment

At Dr. Son’s Rehabilitation Clinic, we combine various non-surgical treatment methods tailored to each patient’s condition. For cervical disc herniation, we use:

  • Nerve Block Injections: Reduce inflammation and calm irritated nerves for rapid pain relief.

  • Selective Nerve Root Injections: Target the specific nerve root compressed by the herniated disc, helping to reduce swelling and improve function.

  • IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation): Releases chronically tense muscles and trigger points, relieving myofascial pain around the neck and shoulders.

  • Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care: Gentle, precise adjustments of the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae can help restore alignment and improve nervous system function, especially in patients with posture-related cervical issues.

We select and combine these treatments based on each patient’s specific symptoms and imaging findings, aiming for recovery without the need for surgery whenever possible.

Conclusion

Cervical disc herniation (neck disc) generally responds better to conservative treatment than lumbar disc herniation, thanks to anatomical and clinical differences. However, each patient is unique, and success depends on accurate diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan.

At Dr. Son Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic, we are committed to providing safe, evidence-based care using nerve block injections, selective nerve root therapy, IMS, and chiropractic upper cervical correction to help our patients recover and return to daily life with confidence.
