The Many Faces of Lumbar Disc Pain – A Case of Hidden Cause Behind Calf Pain
by Son’s Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul
A gentleman in his late 60s recently visited our clinic with persistent pain in the back of his leg and difficulty walking. He had previously received multiple treatments at a traditional medicine hospital, but the discomfort continued, and his ability to walk steadily was worsening.
At first glance, the pain seemed to stem from a possible calf muscle strain or micro-tear, so we began treatment accordingly. However, as time went on, the pattern and character of the pain began to suggest a deeper issue—one that wasn’t just localized to the leg muscles.
Further examination revealed that the true source of the pain was not the leg at all, but the lower back—specifically, lumbar disc-related nerve compression. Once this was identified, we initiated a treatment plan that included nerve-targeted injection therapy, intramuscular stimulation (IMS), and vitamin B12 support.
The results were remarkable. The patient reported significant relief and shared that he was now able to walk continuously without needing to stop—a dramatic change from his previous condition.
When Leg Pain Doesn’t Start in the Leg
One of the most challenging aspects of lumbar disc herniation is that it doesn’t always cause back pain. In fact, it often manifests as pain in areas far from the spine, such as the buttocks, thigh, calf, or even the foot.
This makes lumbar disc issues a true “condition with a thousand faces.” Many patients may initially think their problem is in the leg muscles, the knee joint, or elsewhere—leading to delays in accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
The Importance of Root Cause Diagnosis
What this case reinforces is a key principle in musculoskeletal care:
Where it hurts is not always where the problem is.
Pain can be misleading. That’s why careful assessment and treating the root cause rather than just the symptoms is essential to real recovery.
In our clinic, we don’t settle for surface-level answers. Through detailed evaluation and tailored therapy, we aim to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve the quality of life for each patient—one step at a time.
