A 40-Year-Old Patient with Severe Neck and Shoulder Pain

by Son’s Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul

Regained Daily Function and Golf Enjoyment After a Series of Upper Cervical and IMS Treatments

A man in his 40s visited our clinic with persistent and severe pain in both shoulders, along with chronic upper cervical discomfort. His symptoms had lasted for several years, and despite trying various treatments elsewhere, the pain did not improve significantly. He especially found it difficult to perform daily tasks or enjoy recreational activities due to pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulder area.

Upon thorough physical examination and postural assessment, we found misalignment in the upper cervical spine (C1–C2) and excessive muscle tension in the neck and shoulder girdle. The pain pattern and muscle tenderness suggested the presence of deep myofascial trigger points, as well as dysfunction originating from the upper cervical region.

Based on these findings, we began a treatment program combining precise upper cervical adjustments and integrated intramuscular stimulation (IMS) therapy. The treatment was not a quick fix — symptoms did not disappear after only a few sessions. However, the patient remained consistent with follow-up visits and gradually began to feel improvements.

Over several months of regular care, his range of motion improved, pain intensity decreased, and muscle tightness eased. As the alignment of the upper cervical spine stabilized and deep muscle tension was released through repeated IMS sessions, the patient reported significant relief.

Eventually, he was able to return to golf — a hobby he had given up for over a year due to pain. This wasn’t an overnight transformation but a gradual recovery achieved through persistent and tailored care.

This case illustrates the importance of approaching chronic musculoskeletal pain through a combination of structural alignment and neuromuscular therapy, especially when addressing complex upper cervical and shoulder dysfunction. At Son Cheolho Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic, we are committed to providing individualized, respectful care to help our patients regain a better quality of life.
