A 60-Year-Old Male Patient with Severe Morning Pain:
Recovery Through Integrated Upper Cervical and TMJ Treatment
by Son’s Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul
A 60-year-old male patient recently visited our clinic with complaints of widespread body pain so severe that it was difficult for him to get out of bed in the morning. He was suffering from intense neck pain (cervicalgia), lower back pain, and a persistent sense that his jaw was misaligned. Despite receiving treatment at a dental clinic for his jaw symptoms, his condition did not improve.
Upon his initial evaluation, we performed a comprehensive assessment, including:
-
Upper cervical spine examination
-
X-ray imaging
-
Physical and orthopedic evaluation
The findings indicated that the patient was experiencing both:
✔️ Upper Cervical Syndrome – likely contributing to his widespread musculoskeletal pain
✔️ Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction – related to his jaw misalignment and facial tension
To address these coexisting conditions, we initiated an integrated treatment plan consisting of:
-
Upper cervical correction and stabilization techniques
-
Myofascial release therapy focused on the TMJ and surrounding muscles
-
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) to relieve myofascial pain and restore function
After several sessions, the patient reported significant improvement in his neck and back pain, and he was able to wake up without the overwhelming body aches he previously experienced. Additionally, his jaw discomfort gradually subsided, allowing him to function more comfortably in daily life.
This case highlights the importance of considering the functional interrelationship between the upper cervical spine and the TMJ. In cases where symptoms span multiple regions, a comprehensive and personalized approach can lead to meaningful recovery—even when previous isolated treatments have failed.
