Case Report: Significant Improvement in Chronic Pain After Upper Cervical and Integrative Care – A Post-Trauma Case

by Son’s Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul

A woman in her 40s visited our clinic after experiencing persistent pain in the right side of her neck, arm, lower back, pelvis, and thigh following a traffic accident. Despite receiving multiple treatments at other medical facilities, her symptoms showed little improvement. She was eventually referred to our clinic by another patient.

Upon thorough evaluation—including posture assessment, functional neurological examination, and orthopedic testing—we identified that her symptoms were not limited to the injured areas alone. Instead, there was a functional imbalance involving the upper cervical spine (C1–C2) and the pelvic region, likely contributing to the persistence of her pain.

We implemented an integrative treatment approach, including:

  • Upper cervical chiropractic adjustment focusing on restoring alignment and neural balance

  • Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) for myofascial release and neuromuscular reactivation

  • Pelvic and spinal correction techniques to restore structural stability

Remarkably, after just two sessions, the patient reported substantial relief in both her neck and radiating arm pain, along with marked improvement in her lower back and pelvic symptoms. She also noted better sleep and mental clarity, reflecting overall improvement in her quality of life.

Clinical Reflection

Post-traumatic pain is often complex. It may not be due solely to tissue injury but rather to underlying neurostructural imbalances that develop over time. The upper cervical spine and pelvis serve as key hubs in maintaining the body's structural and neurological balance. Addressing dysfunctions in these regions can produce significant changes, even in cases unresponsive to conventional therapies.

At our clinic, we aim not only to reduce pain but to restore postural harmony and prevent recurrence, offering care that supports long-term recovery and wellbeing.
