Case Report: Post-Trauma Upper Cervical Syndrome with Multisite Symptoms – Improvement After Targeted Treatment

by Son’s Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic in Seoul

A woman in her 30s visited our clinic after being referred by an acquaintance. She had suffered a traffic accident several months prior and had received care at multiple clinics and hospitals. Despite continuous treatment, her symptoms had not improved significantly.

Presenting Symptoms

The patient complained of the following issues:

  • Persistent headache and dizziness

  • Neck pain, particularly around the right trapezius region

  • Radiating pain and numbness in both upper limbs

  • Lower back pain with radiating symptoms in both legs

  • Bilateral knee pain

  • Abnormal sensation in both feet

Her symptoms were widespread, affecting both the upper and lower body, and had significantly impacted her quality of life.

Clinical Findings

A detailed evaluation of the upper cervical spine revealed subtle misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae, a common finding in post-whiplash or trauma-related cases. Based on the pattern of neurological symptoms and imaging studies, we diagnosed the patient with Upper Cervical Syndrome related to previous trauma.

Treatment Approach and Progress

The patient underwent a comprehensive, integrative treatment plan focused on restoring proper alignment and relieving neurological irritation. This included:

  • Precise upper cervical manual therapy

  • Injection therapy aimed at reducing local inflammation and stabilizing the nervous system

  • Myofascial and soft tissue release techniques

After just three sessions, the patient reported a noticeable improvement of more than 30% in overall symptoms, including reduced headaches, numbness, and radiating pain. Her physical comfort and daily functioning also improved significantly.

At Son Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic, we focus not only on symptom relief but also on identifying and correcting underlying biomechanical and neurological dysfunctions, especially those involving the upper cervical spine. This case highlights how subtle misalignments in the upper neck region can contribute to widespread systemic symptoms, and how targeted treatment can offer meaningful improvement.
