Feeling Tension in Your Jaw? Check Your Tongue Position
Hello, this is Dr. Son Rehabilitation Medicine & Chiropractic Clinic.
Do you often feel tightness in your jaw or hear a "clicking" sound when you open your mouth? As a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist and a licensed chiropractor, I’d like to share a simple yet scientifically proven method to relieve jaw tension using the English "/n/" sound.
1. The Science Behind the "/n/" Sound
In speech pathology and rehabilitation, the position your tongue takes when pronouncing the letter "N" is one of the most relaxed states for your jaw. Here is how it works:
Establishing the 'Physiological Rest Position': To make the /n/ sound, your teeth must naturally part by about 2–3mm. This small gap creates what we call the "rest position," allowing the masseter and temporalis muscles (the primary chewing muscles) to stop contracting and finally relax.
Neurological Reciprocal Inhibition: When the muscles that lift the tongue to the roof of the mouth are activated, your nervous system sends a signal to the jaw-closing muscles to relax. This is a natural feedback loop that helps reduce facial muscle strain.
2. Why the "Tongue Up" Position Matters
Many people unconsciously clench their teeth when stressed. Maintaining the "N-position" acts as a natural splint. By resting the tip of your tongue on the alveolar ridge (the bumpy area behind your upper teeth), you ensure that the mandible (lower jaw) hangs naturally by gravity, increasing the joint space and reducing pressure on the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint).
3. A 10-Second Daily Routine for Jaw Relief
You can practice this anywhere—at work, while driving, or before sleep:
Gently say the word "N~" and feel where your tongue touches the roof of your mouth.
Keep your tongue in that position, but stop making the sound.
Ensure your upper and lower teeth are not touching.
Relax your lips and breathe deeply through your nose.
